New, Up to 12 GB/s Throughput Capacity Increase Amazon FSx for Windows File Server

If you followed the storage day event on 9 August 2023, you will hear the speakers for Amazon FSx session talk about this increase in throughput capacity. AWS announced Higher Throughput Capacity Levels on Amazon FSx for Windows File Servers for up to 12 GB per second moving away from the previous I/O of 2 GB per second. Available at: (https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/aws/welcome-to-aws-storage-day-2023/', Veliswa Boya blog, 10 August)

It's great to hear about the performance improvements for Amazon FSx for Windows File Server! These enhancements will certainly benefit users with performance-intensive workloads. The addition of higher throughput capacity levels, going up to 12 GB per second, and the increase in disk IOPS up to 350,000, will allow for faster data access and processing for tasks such as SQL Server databases, media processing, cloud video editing, and virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI).

The ability to provision IOPS higher than the default 3 IOPS per GiB for SSD file systems is a significant advancement. This means that you can now scale SSD IOPS independently from storage capacity, which provides greater flexibility and cost optimization for workloads that require high levels of performance.

The reference to the "Migrate NAS to AWS" session suggests that Amazon FSx for Windows File Server can also be a solution for migrating Network Attached Storage (NAS) setups to AWS. This migration can potentially reduce Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and increase operational agility by leveraging the enhanced performance capabilities of FSx for Windows File Server.

If you're interested in learning more about these performance improvements and how to effectively use Amazon FSx for Windows File Server, joining the "Migrate NAS to AWS" session would likely provide you with valuable insights and practical guidance. This session could cover topics such as best practices for migrating, optimizing, and managing your workloads on FSx for Windows File Server within the AWS ecosystem.
